Buddy's UK Climbing Wall Guide
...About My Guide

Overview

On this page I will tell you a little about my guide and why I produced it.

It is compiled by climbing wall enthusiasts, for climbing wall enthusiasts - whether you’re a novice looking for somewhere to learn or an experienced climber looking for a new challenge!

The Guide – If you’re reading this you’re probably passionate about climbing. Living in Norfolk, as I do, there is little opportunity for me to do any real climbing without a 200 mile drive. Although I make the pilgrimage up north (and sometimes south) it’s not very often (or not as often as I would like). As I enjoy the challenges of climbing I make great use of the numerous climbing walls in the UK. The trouble is I get board very easily and am always looking for something new and different to do, but knowing where to go has often proved a problem – hence this climbing wall guide. I have also found climbing walls are a good substitute for when I do go to the mountains and it pours with rain all day – something that seems to happen all too frequently !!

The Buddy Star Rating System – as well as providing the usual information on the size and number of routes, their grades (where these are available!), opening hours etc. I will also give my opinion on the overall assessment of the climbing wall giving each a star rating from one to five (some climbing walls may not have a star rating – this will simply be that I haven’t yet climbed there). The stars will be awarded based on twenty six different criteria. These will include an assessment of the routes, the way the wall is managed and its suitability for different abilities of climber.

Technical Tips - When I started climbing I found I hadn’t got the strength in my fingers and arms (or legs for that matter) that I needed to climb well so I employed a fitness coach to help me develop those all important muscles. I will pass some of these tips onto you as well as providing some online instruction on how to improve your climbing technique.

Ice Climbing - I will also cover Ice Climbing Walls but these will be reviewed by other climbing enthusiasts as I haven’t yet tried ice climbing (but I will soon!).

General Information - Other sections will explain the various systems for grading climbs that are used by different centres and some history on the development of climbing walls in this country.

Have Your Say (others have!) - These are the sort of things that I always want to know about a wall - if there are others that you would like know, then please email me and I will add them to my research. I would like this site to combine a number of opinions – not just mine. You can do this on the “Climber’s Page” or on the “Get Regular Updates” link below.

The Future -I hope you find this site helpful and easy to use and that it gives you the information on climbing walls that you are looking for. I will in the future be adding reviews on climbing equipment and building a directory of climbing clubs in the UK.

Receiving Updates - If you wish to be the first to receive new or updated information from Buddy’s Climbing Wall Guide then simply complete the request box at the end of each page in the “Find a Wall” section – I won’t bombard you with spam (I hate it too!).

Best Regards

David
